Milwaukee Recreation and MPS Athletics are proud to launch a series of videos highlighting the many reasons our high school students play sports. Each 30-second video features one MPS athlete. The videos are being released on Milwaukee Recreation's Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram accounts with the hashtag #whyiplay. Every week, we will introduce a new video to encourage greater participation in MPS Athletics. Please share these videos with your family, friends, and school community.

"As far as playing soccer, I really enjoy it... It's helped me get to know more people, be more fit, and be the best person I can be," Staja, a senior at Riverside High School, said.

"It’s helped me increase my competitiveness and taught me how to work with other people."

Other student athletes also spoke on the benefits of high school sports:

"Soccer and sports in general have [taught] me how to be a leader both on and off the field. I volunteer as an assistant teacher and I believe that if I continue to play sports, it’s going to allow me to have those leadership skills that I need to succeed in life," Reagan High graduate Nelson said.

And while sports certainly impact one's high school experience, the benefits can extend beyond the school walls as well. Milwaukee Public Schools superintendent Darienne Driver, a former high school athlete herself, can surely attest to that.

"Colleges and employers will want to review your grades, but they will also be impressed to hear about your participation in high school athletics. I’m challenging you to get involved — you'll be grateful down the road!" Driver said.

MPS Athletics promotes athletes' core responsibilities as they pursue personal growth in the classroom and on the field.

Student athletes learn a great deal from participating in interscholastic athletics. Lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, competition, and how to win and lose gracefully are all integral parts of team goals. Athletic competition adds to school spirit and helps students, participants, and community members take pride in their schools.

If you're interested in pursuing your goals on the field or in the gym, then head to our MPS Athletics page for more information on registration.
